In Her Boots

Australia’s national sport - Australian Rules Football - has a long, celebrated history. Men’s history. Unknown to many, the women’s game has been played for just as long, but without the same recognition and fanfare. During the 8th professional season of the women’s league, Johnnie Walker and the AFLW set out to write this untold history of women’s footy. Taking the old playing boots of female footy legends, we stitched them into 5 bespoke pairs of football boots, piecing together their footy history in the process. These wearable record books were then handed to down to the current generation of AFLW trailblazers, inspiring them and future generations to continue to walk the game forward. One of the pairs of boots even became an official accolade at the end of season W Awards - The Johnnie Walker Award for Progress - presented to the woman who played the game with the same spirit as the past legends. The campaign was supported by a documentary film, an interactive online experience, national OOH campaign and earned media.
